Only hours after their tourmates Japanese Breakfast took the stage at Baby’s, 80s synthpop auteurs Porches played a free secret show for vocalist Aaron Maine’s birthday.
Opening the show was Rivergazer, the project of Porches guitarist Kevin Farrant whose sensibilities for smooth, hazy indie pop recall the chillwave sound of Washed Out and Toro Y Moi. At points, the band was backed by Porches bass player/vocalist Maya Laner and Cameron Wisch on drum sampler.
Porches initially began as a more collaborative rock based effort with girlfriend Greta Kline aka Frankie Cosmos on his initial LP “Slow Dance in the Cosmos.” On his latest effort “Pool” the band takes a more sleek approach to production and songwriting that breathes new life into 80s synthpop nostalgia. The set comprised mostly of tracks off their sophomore album, while also throwing in “Headsgiving” off the first record. The band also played a new track “Black Dress” off of the new “Water” release which features demos from “Pool.” For this song, the band was joined by Dev Hynes aka Blood Orange, who also said “Happy Birthday, Ricky” referring to Maine’s alter-ego. Hynes was also spotted hanging with indie rock royalty Julian Casablancas.
